Valedictory function of Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations held today

Grand functions organized by Southern Railway at Tiruvallikkeni, Tiruppur, Vellore Cantonment, Vanchi Maniyachchi and Nilambur Road hounouring the legacy of freedom fighters

The Valedictory Central function of the Iconic week celebration of the event "Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations" was held today,  23rd July 2022 in New Delhi.  Shri Prahlad Joshi, Hon’ble Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Minesdelivered keynote address and interacted with some freedom fighters and their families who graced the event at various locations. The Minister also flagged off the Bharat Gaurav Tourist Circuit train from Madurai to Varanasi.  Shri Danve Raosaheb Dadarao Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Railways, Coal and Mines attended the event through virtual means. Smt. Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Textiles and Railways, and Shri V.K.Tripathy, Chairman & CEO, Railway Board were present at the function. 

In Southern Railway, the central valedictory function was live streamed at all the five stations, namely, Vellore Cantonment, Vanchi Maniyachi, Tiruppur, Nilambur Road, and Tiruvallikeni which are among the 75 railway stations pan-India identified for the program.


In Chennai Division, at Tiruvallikeni MRTS Station, Shri Karuppaiah, a 99-year old freedom fighter was the special guest at Tiruvallikkeni.  He was a volunteer in the Nethaji’s Azad Hind Fauj (INA) movement.  In 1943-44, Shri Karuppaiah had actively participated as a volunteer in fund raising programme of Nethaji in Myanmar ( Burma). Shri Prahlad Joshi, Hon’ble Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines interacted with Shri Karuppaiah and paid respects.


Shri Niranjan Bharathi, a fifth-generation descendant of Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar, graced the occasion.  Addressing mediapersons, he thanked the Central Government for organizing the iconic week celebrations at Tiruvallikkeni, the place where Mahakavi Bharathi spent the eventful last few years of his life.  He expressed pride in participating in the function o­n behalf of Bharatiyar’s family.  A tamil film lyricist and an accomplished poet, Shri Niranjan Bharathi follows the footsteps of his great grandfather in writing and publishing tamil literary works. He is advocating the spread of Tamil language across the world through his â€œMYTAMILGURU” e-school.


Shri Ganesh, DRM, Chennai felicitated Shri Karuppaiah and Shri Niranjan Bharathi during the function.  Speaking at the event, DRM praised Bharatiyar’s  voluminous contribution to the freedom movement through his literary works and fiery poems.


Similar events were held at all the other four stations, viz., Tiruppur, Vanchi Maniyachchi, Vellore Cantonment and Nilambur Road.  Freedom fighters and/or their families who graced the occasion as special guests were  felicitated.


As part of the iconic week celebrations, cultural programmes and photo exhibitions recalling the legacy of freedom fighters were held at the five stations in Southern Railway during 18th July-23rd July 2022.  Façade lighting arrangements and Selfie points at the station were also the key attractions during the week. Railway Officers and Staff, rail users and general public attended the events in large numbers.

Southern Railway to celebrate Iconic Week of ‘Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations’ from 18th to 23rd July 2022

Commemorative events to be held at five railway stations associated with Great freedom fighters/event

In Southern Railway, the iconic week of ‘Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations’ under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav will be observed from 18th to 23rd July 2022.  Five railway stations that takes pride in its historical association with great leaders and martyrs of Indian independence have been identified for celebrations during the week.  The five stations and the great freedom fighters/events associated with them are:

1.Tiruvallikkeni (MRTS) and Mahakavi Subramanya Bharatiyar

2.Tiruppur and Thiyagi Tiruppur Kumaran

3.Vanchi Maniyachchi and Martyr Vanchinathan

4.Vellore Cantonment and Vellore Mutiny

5.Nilambur Road and ‘Lion of Kerala’ Pazhassi Raja

The central function of the iconic week celebration of the event ‘ Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations’ was inaugurated by the Chairman and CEO of Railway Board, Shri Vinay Kumar Tripathi, today 18th July 2022

At Tiruvallikeni MRTS Railway Stationthe above central programme of the Iconic Week Celebration was telecast live.  Later,  Shri B.G.Mallya, General Manager, Southern Railway,  inaugurated the photo Exhibition and also unveiled the Selfie Point, followed by a Patriotic Cultural Program in the presence of Shri Ganesh, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai, Shri K.Harikrishnan, Principal Chief Personnel Officer, Heads of Departments of Southern Railway, other Railway Officials,Invitees and Passengers.

Tiruvallikkeni o­n the (MRTS) network of Chennai suburban is located in close proximity to Bharathiyar Illam. Mahakavi  Subramaniya Bharathiyar as a poet, journalist, freedom fighter and social reformer had made a great impact o­n Indian Freedom Struggle. At  Bharathiyar Illam in Tiruvallikkeni he spent the later half of his eventful life penning down patriotic poems that kindled patriotic fervour in Indian youth.

Similar events were held under the aegis of the respective Divisional Railway Managers at the other four stations identified for celebrations viz., Tiruppur, Vellore Cantonment, Vanchi Maniyachchi and Nilambur Road.

In Southern Railway, as part of the iconic week at the above listed five stations, various events will be held during the week from 18th to 23nd July, 2022.  During the celebrations, the families of the freedom martyrs will be invited and honoured, the inspiring stories of the great leaders will be shared as audio visuals  and patriotic jingles/songs will be played at these stations.  Selfie-points, photo exhibitions, Light and sound shows and cultural events have also been planned at some stations.

Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations

In commemoration of 75 glorious years of Independent India, Government of India has been observing a year-long event named ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.   Ministry of Railways is also organizing a host of thematic events pan-India marking the 75th year of country’s independence.  As the event lead and nodal Ministry in July 2022 (among other Central Government Ministries), Ministry of Railways will organize the iconic week of ‘Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations’ under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.  75 Iconic railway stations and 27 trains associated with martyrs and various event of Indian freedom struggle will be spotlighted as part of the milestone celebration.

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics and Information Technology will participate in the valedictory event of the Iconic Week Celebrations to be held in New Delhi o­n 23rd July 2022.

The official journey of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commenced o­n 12th March 2021 which started a 75-week countdown to our 75th anniversary of independence and will culminate o­n 15th August 2023.
