PRESS RELEASE ER’s ECO-FRIENDLY BIO-TOILETS ATTRIBUTE HYGIENIC JOURNEY FOR PASSENGERS Kolkata, January 13, 2021: Eastern Railway has provided bio-toilets in all types of ICF & LHB coaches. The introduction of bio-toilets helped in elimination of direct discharge of human excreta on to the tracks, thereby, making the system more environment friendly. This is also in line with Govt. of India policy of “Swachh Bharat Mission”. It has eliminated the need for manual scavenging in station premises. It also eliminated human excreta from coaches on to the track. Bio-toilet decomposes human excretory waste in the digester tank, using specific high graded bacteria. The end products are methane gas, carbon di-oxide and water. The process inactivates the pathogens responsible for water-borne diseases and treats the waste without the use of an external energy source. But, success of the Railway’s effort depend upon the users i.e Railway passengers. Certain basic norms need to be followed by the users of bio-toilets in trains. Any kind of waste, napkin etc. should not be thrown inside the pans/commodes. only the dustbin provided in the lavatories should be used for discarding such waste. Flushing should be done before and after use of the toilet. Throwing of waste into the Bio-toilet causes clogging of the toilet and creates an unhealthy condition. For an eco-friendly environment, Eastern Railway urges upon all the passengers to use Bio-Toilets observing the specified norms so that clean & green environment free of human excreta can be maintained at stations and passengers can enjoy comfortable journey in a hygienic manner.
