SINGH HOSPITAL, SEALDAH Kolkata, August 02, 2022: World Breast Feeding Week, a global awareness campaign, was inaugurated on 1st August, 2022 at B.R. Singh Hospital with the theme – "Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support". The celebration is jointly hosted by Eastern Railway Medical Department and Indian Public Health Association. Breast Feeding is recommended by World Health Organization exclusively for first six months of life, followed by continued breast feeding with appropriate supplementary food upto 2 years and beyond. Dr. Rudrendu Bhattacharya, Principal Chief Medical Director/Eastern Railway, Shri Sheelendra Pratap Singh/Divisional Railway Manager/Sealdah and Dr. Indira Jha/Medical Director/B.R. Singh Hospital and other senior doctors graced the occasion. A breast feeding room in the first floor of OPD complex at B.R. Singh Hospital was inaugurated for the sake of nursing mothers attending OPD and also started celebration of Breast Feeding Week at the Hospital auditorium. Dr. Sanghamitra Ghosh, Secretary General of Indian Public Health Association was also present and delivered speech to protect, promote & support breast feeding across different levels of society. All the doctors have stressed on different aspects of breast feeding as this is the key to sustainable development to improve nutrition, ensure food security and reduce inequalities. A role play (Skit) was staged by nursing students of Central Nursing Training Institute messaging the benefits and role of family support in successful breast feeding. The programme was organized by Health & Family Welfare Unit and conducted by Department of Paediatrics.
