NFR begins mechanized renewal of track in Night block

For the 1st time, NF Railway has started work of renewal of rails and sleepers by a 100% mechanized method, during night hours. Although mechanized renewal of track assets has been done in the past, this is the first time that the work has been done during the night time.

Dhupguri - Khalaigram block section of Alipurduar division which is single line section having line capacity more than 170% has been selected for doing the work. A very high density of traffic makes it very difficult to block the track for maintenance work during the day hours. That is why night working is being resorted to. The process is a 100% mechanized process of track relaying where about 300 m track is renewed in a single block. An additional Track is laid along the main track for the up and down movement of the machine.

The working at night is very tough and requires a lot of lighting arrangements so that labour and machineries can work smoothly. For the purpose of this 2 nos. of 63KVA, generators were used with 65 Halogen lights in a length of 500 m on both sides of track. One Officer, 2 Supervisors from railway side, 3 Supervisors from contractor side and 120 labours were engaged in this block so that the maximum output can be obtained.
