Press Release: ER COMPLETED WORK OF CASTING OF BACK SPAN OF CHANDMARI ROAD OVER BRIDGE IN RECORD TIME

ER COMPLETED WORK OF CASTING OF BACK SPAN OF CHANDMARI ROAD OVER BRIDGE IN RECORD TIME

Kolkata, March 24, 2022

The mammoth work of 4-lane cable stayed Road Over Bridge (ROB) in lieu of existing Chandmari ROB was sanctioned in the year 2009-2010.The estimate was sanctioned in the year 2018 on 50:50 cost sharing basis with the Government of West Bengal.

The work of Foundation and substructure has already been completed. Casting of the pre-stressed deck slab of back span of the ROB was a major challenge as the entire 77m of back span, which is a combination of voided and solid slab, has to be casted in single stretch to make the span monolithic. The width of the ROB for a 4 lane (including Foot-Path) is designed as 26.4m. A volume of 2000m3 of concrete was required. Total reinforcement of 650MT was used to strengthen the back span of the ROB. The back span of the ROB is one of a kind and is designed with combination of Steel reinforcement, Pre-stressed cables and void former (to reduce the dead weight of the deck slab).

The major challenge in planning for this un-interrupted concrete casting was that it has to be carried out in a densely populated area of Howrah Maidan. The transit mixers from the ready mix suppliers has to reach the construction site without delay to maintain the continuity and quality of the concrete. All safety precautions as required were taken so that no inconvenience is caused to the road users.

This part of work was completed on 24.3.2022 at 07:30 hrs. in a record time of 26hrs. Eastern Railway got immense cooperation for execution of the work from the traffic department of Howrah & Kolkata Police Commissionerate.

Under the able guidance of Shri Arun Arora, General Manager, Eastern Railway is striving relentlessly to accomplish all the pending construction projects within stipulated timeframe for improving safety of train services as well as road traffic. The reconstruction of Chandmari Road Over Bridge will facilitate more hassle free train services and will ensure to the safety of the passengers.
