A Railway Driver has no steering, has no control on the path on which his train will move. He does not even know the diversion his train will take.  Ins pite of that, large number of trains enter and leave a station without obstructing each other. The safety of passenger is ensured as long as Driver follows the Signals given to him. It is the Signal Engineer and Telecom. Engineer whose job is to ensure this feat.  The operating staff (like Station Master) keep on giving commands for receiving, dispatching or diversion of trains without having to know the conditions in the yard and section. The amazing feature of the system is that in the milieu where so many signals are being lowered, and route diversions are being fixed, an Operator will not be able to issue a command, unless it is safe.  This specialized engineering to ensure absolute safety of passengers is not taught in any of the engineering colleges. The level of safety which is called Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL 4) is much stringent requirement  than the usually touted 6 Sigma standard.  Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications, in short IRISET, trains officers and supervisors of Signal and Telecommunication department.  Apart from training of probationers (officers) and apprentices (supervisors), IRISET runs regular mandatory refresher courses.
