Central Railway observes World Heritage Day 2023

Heritage Walk and Booklet-Release on Matheran Light Railway organized at CSMT

Central Railway observed World Heritage Day with great ardor and zeal as it is moving ahead into the 171st year of dedicated service in India. World Heritage Day offers us the platform to focus on reviving and conserving the ancient heritage and take pride in the same. Constituted by International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), this day is observed on April 18 every year.

Mumbai Division started its heritage day celebrations with a ‘Heritage Walk’ that began from the heritage gully of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) under the guidance of Shri Naresh Lalwani, General Manager, Central Railway and led by Shri Alok Singh, Additional General Manager; Shri Sunil Kumar, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer,  Shri Rajnish Goyal, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Mumbai Division and other Officers of Central Railway. Shri Alok Singh released a booklet on Matheran Light Railway, compiled by Environment and Housekeeping Management (EnHM) section and visited the exhibits displayed across the corridors of Platform Nos. 14 & 15. The heritage walk culminated in the GM Building Museum where the PHODs viewed the exhibits and were exhilarated by the history of Central Railway heritage.

The evening of World Heritage Day will see illumination of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus building which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This remarkable building which is a fine example of Indo-Gothic architecture is 135 years old.

Mumbai division’s Byculla station is another fine example of heritage conservation by Central Railway. The 170 years old station, commissioned in 1853 was a part of the first train journey from Boribunder to Thane. This station was restored to its original Gothic Architectural glory and is being maintained and conserved today.

The Neral-Matheran Light Railway is one few heritage railways in India which is 116 years old. The construction of this railway started in 1904 and service started in 1907.Today Central Railway runs services from Neral to Matheran and passengers can enjoy a memorable trip amidst nature.

NFR gears up restoration work in Dima Hasao

Despite rainfall acting as barrier in the work process

Maligaon, 13th June, 2022:

The situation in Dima Hasao is gradually returning to normalcy. Restoration work of the railways continues in full swing. In the beginning of 2nd week of May, due to heavy torrential rains and massive landslides, around 85 Kms of railway track in the Lumding – Badarpur hill section of Lumding division were badly affected. Breaches had occurred at more than 61 locations in this section, resulting disruption of the rail communication to the hilly states of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and parts of Assam. In total, restoration works at 46 locations have already been completed and work at other 15 critical locations is going on in full vigour.

During mid of May, 2022, Dima Hasao witnessed more than the normal rainfall. In locations like Maibong, Mahur, New Haflong, Jatinga Lampur, New Harangajao and Damcherra the exaggerated downpour resulted in landslips, flash floods and washouts causing the disruption. N.F. Railway is targeting speedy restoration work in the entire hill section with an aim to restart services by 10th July, 2022. The weather in this region is still fierce, but the intensity of rainfall has lessened. Even in such weather, thousands of workers and hundreds of machines are working day and night in this area under the supervision of Railway officials. The entire stretch from Badarpur to Jatinga Lumpur has already been restored.

N.F. Railway authorities with co-ordination and co-operation of different organisations have geared up for early restoration to bring the hill section’s railway connectivity back on track. Officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway are working relentlessly to restore communication as early as possible for the affected population of the cut-off region.
