RARE CARDIAC SURGERY DONE AT B R SINGH RAILWAYS HOSPITAL Kolkata, May 23, 2023: Eastern Railway’s B.R. Singh Hospital is striving hard to provide super specialty standard facilities to its employees and beneficiaries. In that endeavour, the cardiology and cardiovascular surgery team at B R Singh Railway Hospital successfully performed a rare surgery on a 20-year old young man hailing from Jamalpur. He had presented with palpitations on exertion for about 12 months as the routine echocardiogram had failed to diagnose any abnormalities. He underwent a trans-esophageal echocardiogram (TEE), which picked up a sinus venosus atrial septal defect with anomaly of the right upper pulmonary vein. This disorder is congenital and seen in less than 1 per 10000 individuals. Subsequently, he was operated upon by the cardiovascular surgical team, where the defect was closed and the pulmonary vein was rerouted successfully through minimal access surgery, which avoided the need for an open chest surgery (sternotomy).
