WATER TREATMENT PLANT COMMISSIONED AT ER’S AZIMGANJ JN. OF HOWRAH DIVISION

Kolkata, August 2, 2021:

Water treatment plant of capacity 3.2 Million Litre/Day for drinking water facility at Azimganj Jn. has been constructed by Eastern Railway’s Construction Department and commissioned recently.

At present, there is a ground water supply at Azimganj through deep tubewell/boring which consists of high concentration of fluoride, arsenic and iron. To solve this problem, this water treatment plant has been commissioned for the supply of treated pure water to passengers, East & West Railway staff colonies and coaching complex at Azimganj Railway station to meet the daily demand.

The work involves construction of main intake jetty in river Bhagirathi with raw water pumphouse and 3.2 Million Litre/Day capacity filter system. Raw water from the river Bhagirathi undergoes various processes which include (1) Collection, (2) screening & straining, (3) chemical addition, (4) sedimentation & clarification, (5) filtration, (6) Storage & (7) final distribution. All the process is ensured by different mechanisms such as clarifiers, pressure sand filter, jetty pump, back wash water pump, air blower etc. There is also a facility of site laboratory where quality of treated water can be monitored scrupulously.
