Southern Railway is operating 50 Special trains with 244 trips to ensure smooth and comfortable travel for the passengers during this summer season 37 Summer Special trains covering 526 trips are notified by Other Zonal Railways to serve SR destinations During the summer season this year, for the convenience of railway travelers and to clear extra rush of passengers, Southern Railway is operating 244 trips of 50 special trains. The major destinations/routes connected are Tambaram – Tirunelveli/Sengottai, Chennai Egmore – Kanniyakumari/Nagercoil/ Further, other zonal Railways have notified 37 summer special trains covering 526 trips to various destinations in Southern Railway. Some of the major destinations connected in Southern Railway are Chennai, Tiruchchirappalli, Coimbatore, Madurai, Velankanni and Mangaluru. Apart from regular services, Summer (reserved) special trains are being run in Nilgiri Mountain Railway for the benefit of tourists visiting the scenic hill stations of Ooty and Coonoor. Three Round trip NMR joy ride services are also being operated during weekends from April 2023 between Udhagamandalam and Ketti. Indian Railways is operating 380 summer special Trains with 6369 trips Indian Railways is running 6369 trips of 380 special trainsduring the summer season this year to clear extra rush of passengers,Indian Railways is running 1770 morr trips this year as compared to total summer special trains (4599 trips by 348 trains) run in 2022. While an average 13.2 trips per train was run last summer, 16.8 trips per special train are being made in the current year.. In totality, these 380 special trains making 6369 trips have 25794 General Coaches and 55243 Sleeper Coaches. General Coaches have a capacity of 100 passengers whereas Sleeper Coaches have a capacity of 72 passengers in ICF and 78 in LHB. However, neither the number of trains nor the number of trips run by specific special train(s) is static for the entire season. Planning and running of special trains is a continuous process for which inputs are taken from all the communication channels 24x 7 like media reports, Social media platforms, Railway Integrated helpline number 139, apart from details of waitlist passengers in the PRS system to assess demand of trains on a particular route. Based on this requirement, the number of trains and number of trips are augmented. A watch on any malpractices – like cornering of seats, over-charging and touting activity etc. is being kept by the team of commercial and RPF Staff.

In Tamil Nadu jurisdiction of Southern Railway, there are 95 Railway stations with ‘One Station one Product’ stalls Objective is to promote ‘Vocal for Local’ vision, provide a market for local/indigenous productsIn Tamil Nadu, a total of 593 Artisans, Weavers, Craftsmen and members of marginalized sections are the beneficiaries under OSOP Scheme since inception Southern Railway launched ‘One Station one Product’ (OSOP) scheme across various stations in its jurisdiction with the objectives to promote ‘Vocal for Local’ vision of the Government of India, provide a market for local/indigenous products and create additional income opportunities for the marginalised sections of society. Under this scheme, OSOP outlets at railway stations are allotted for showcasing, selling and giving high visibility to indigenous /local products. The pilot scheme was started on 25.03.2022. As on 15.05.2023, there are 95 OSOP stalls in various Railway stations in the State of Tamil Nadu and 2 OSOP Stalls in the Union Territory ofPuducherry (Annexure-A). These OSOP outlets are designed through National Institute for uniformity. Product Features: The products showcased in ‘One Station one Product’ outlets are specific to that place and include artefacts made by indigenous tribes, handlooms by local weavers, handicrafts like world famous Kanchipuram silk sarees, tanjoredolls,Kovilpatti peanut burfis, spices tea, coffee and other processed/semi processed food items/products indigenously grown in the area. Product categories, under this scheme, broadly include the following:
Beneficiaries: In the state of Tamil Nadu, the OSOP scheme has provided business opportunities for 593 beneficiaries since inception. The beneficiary desirous of running OSOP outlets should be a holder of Artisan/Weaver ID card issued by Development Commissioner Handicrafts, Development Commissioner Handloom, or by the requisite State/Central Government Authority or Individual artisans/weavers/craftsmen enrolled/registered with TRIFED/ NHDC/KVIC etc. or Self Help Groups registered with PMEGP or any eligible member of marginalized/ weaker sections of society. Keeping in mind the objective of this scheme, a transparent mechanism is being followed for allotment of outlets. An Expression of Interest is invited from interested artisan, weavers and other eligible persons. Selection is made based on draw of lots by a committee formed at station level for this purpose. The eligible party (beneficiary) shall set up a stall at Railway station to sell local/indigenous products for 15 days, on payment of a nominal token fee remitted along with the application.
