In order to achieve the objective of Indian Railways to become 100% self sustainable for all it's power needs and also to contribute to national solar power goals, Western Railway has solarised its 75 stations till date. The use of solar power will accelerate the Railway's mission to achieve the goal of becoming “Net Zero Carbon Emission Railway”before 2030.

According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur - Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, suitable Rooftop Solar Panels have been installed at 75 stations over Western Rly. 8.67 MWpcapacity rooftop solar plants have been provided at various railway stations and office buildings. These plants have been commissioned and connected to grid and as a result, there is a saving ofRs. 3 crore is accrued during the financial year.

Shri Thakur informed that Solar Plants have been installed at 22 stations in Mumbai Division, 34 stations in Ratlam Division, 6 stations of Vadodara Division & 8 stations in Rajkot Division. Similarly, in Ahmedabad Division, solar plants have been installed at Sabarmati & Ambli Road stations as well as Ahmedabad station building whereas in Bhavnagar Division at Bhavnagar station & Somnath station building. In Mumbai Division, the rooftop Solar Plants have been installed at Churchgate, Grant Road, Matunga Road, Andheri, Mumbai Central, Lower Parel, Mahim, Khar Road, Santacruz, Ram Mandir, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Naigaon, Vasai Road, Nallasopara, Dahanu Road stations, while atDadar as well as at Bandra Terminus, station buildings & platforms. In Ratlam Division, rooftop Solar Plants have been installed at Chanderiya, Nimbhera, Gambhiri, Jawad Road, MangliyaGaon, Ajnod, Lakshmibai Nagar, Ranyal, Jasmiya, Pipliya, Mandsaur, Nauganwan, Runija, Bangrod, Sehore, Kalapipla, Pachwan, Maksi, Vikramnagar station buildings, Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Chittaurgadh, Meghnagar, Bajrangarh, Fatehabad, Gautampura, Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow), Nagda, Nimach, Jaora,Badnagar, Shujalpur, Kachrod stations and at Ratlam station building & platforms. In Vadodara Division, the rooftop Solar Plants have been installed at Vadodara, Od, Makarpura, Varnarna, Sadhanpura station buildings and at Godhra staton building & platforms. In Rajkot Division, the rooftop Solar Plants have been installed at Rajkot, Okha, Jamnagar, Chamaraj, Lakhamachi, Modpur, Lakhabawal and Pipli stations.

It is worth mentioning that Indian Railways is set to produce solar energy for meeting all it's energy consumption needs of more than 33 billion units by 2030. Current annual requirement is about 20 billion units. Indian Railways has a mega plan for installing solar plants of 20 GW capacity by 2030 by utilizing its vacant land. About 51,000 hectares of vacant land is available with Indian Railways and is now ready to extend all support to the developers for installing solar power plants o­n Railway’s vacant un-encroached land. It may be noted that Railways is also set to achieve 100% electrification by the year 2023 and is committed to utilize solar energy for meeting its traction power requirement and become a complete ‘Green mode of transportation’. This is in line with the recent directive of Hon’ble Prime Minister to solarise railway stations and utilize vacant railway land for Renewable Energy (RE) projects.

            Despite of nationwide lockdown, Western Railway’s Parcel special trains have  continued to transport all types of essential material to various parts of the country, especially the medicines & medical goods as a prime need in present scenario. In the wake COVID19, during the lockdown period, Western Railway is not o­nly ensuring the supply of milk and other necessary products to different parts of the country through its various parcel special trains, butit has also taken the responsibility of transporting most essential items like medicines, medical goods, medical equipments etc in small parcel sizes across the nation, as it is fully committed to the needs of its customers. Since 23rdMarch, 2020 to 17th April, 2020, almost 6000 packages of medicines have been supplied weighing more than a hundred tonne. It is pertinent to mention that, not just medicines, medical goods such as masks, sanitisers, surgical goods, PPEs etc which are the need of the hour, have been supplied o­n top priority. More than 9500 of such packages weighing almost 215 tonnes have been supplied.

According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar - Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the medicines and medical supplies have been supplied from Gujarat and Maharashtra to Rajasthan and Northern India, as well as to the North East through the parcel special trains. He further added that even o­n WR, upto 17th April, 2020 approx 1.1 lakh masks and almost 8000 liters of sanitizers were made inhouse at various divisions and workshops of WR during the lockdown period. Shri Bhakar saidthat 3 more parcel special trains are decided to be operated from WR with 6 trips betweenPalanpur – Salchapra, Kankaria – Sankrail and Karambeli – New Guwahati. Details of these parcel special trains are as under :-

Palanpur – Salchapra parcel special train (2 trips)

Train No 00909 Palanpur – Salchapra parcel special will leave from Palanpur o­n 21st April, 2020 at 23.30 hrs to reach Salchapra at 23.55 hrs o­n 23rd April, 2020. Similarly, Train No 00910 Salchapra – Palanpur parcel special will leave Salchapra at 15.00 hrs o­n 24th April, 2020 to reach Palanpur at 16.50 hrs o­n 26thApril, 2020. This train will halt at Ajmer, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Achhnera, Agra Fort, Tundla, Prayagraj, Pt. Deen Dayal Uphadhyaya, Patliputra, Sonpur, Katihar, New Jalpaiguri, New Bongaigaon, Changsari, New Guwahati, Lumding and Badarpur stations in both directions.

Kankaria – Sankrail parcel special train (2 trips)

Train No 00905 Kankaria - Sankrail parcel special will leave Kankaria at 18.30 hrs o­n 20th April, 2020 to reach Sankrail Goods Terminal at 04.00 hrs o­n 22nd April, 2020. Similarly, Train No 00906 Sankrail – Kankaria parcel special will leave Sankrail at 22.00 hrs o­n 22nd April, 2020 and reach Kankaria at 07.40 hrs o­n 24thApril, 2020. This train will halt at Anand, Ratlam, Ujjain, Sant Hirdaramnagar, Bina, New Katani, Bilaspur, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Tata Nagar and Kharagpur station in both directions.

Karambeli – New Guwahati parcel special train (2 trips)

Train No 00903 Karambeli – New Guwahati parcel special will leave at 18.00 hrs o­n 19th April, 2020 to reach New Guwahati at 10.30 hrs o­n 21st April, 2020. Similarly, Train No 00904 will leave New Guwahati o­n 22nd April, 2020 at 05.00 hrs to reach Karambeli at 22.00 hrs o­n 23rd April, 2020. The train will halt at Bhusaval, Khandwa, Itarsi, Jabalpur, Katni, Satna, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Patliputra, Sonpur, Katihar, New Jalpaiguri and New Bongaigaon stations in both directions.

Shri Bhakar stated that since 23rd March to 17th April, 2020, twelve milk special trains were run, with a load of more than 8000 tonnes and 100% utilization of the wagons generating revenue of Rs 1.44 crore. Similarly, 4 indented rakes carrying 1864 tonnes were run with 100% utilization generating revenue of more than Rs 77 lakh. In addition to this, 47 Covid-19 special parcel trains were also run during this period to transport essential commodities, for which the revenue earned was Rs 1.41 crore. Such loading was possible due to constant efforts by WR to deliver its best. Wide publicity of WR's parcel special trains is being ensured by way of advertisements & news in newspapers, as well as through social media and SMS, so that traders can book their parcels thereby ensuring that there is no dearth of essentials required by the people. Even during the loading/unloading work, proper norms of social distancing is observed and the labourers are provided with hand sanitizers. As goodwill gesture arrangements for food is also made for the labourers.

Shri Bhakar stated that five parcel special trains left from WR to various parts of the country o­n 18th April, 2020 viz.Mumbai Central – Firozpur, Porbandar – Shalimar, Bandra Terminus – Okha, Okha – Bandra Terminus, andBhuj - Dadar. o­ne milk rake also left from Palanpur to Hind Terminal. During the lockdown period from 22ndMarch to 17th April, 2020, total 1637 rakes of goods trains have been used to supply essential commodities amounting to 3.53 million tonnes. 3643 freight trains were interchanged with other railways, including 1854 trains handed over and 1789 trains taken over at different interchange points.  65 Millennium Parcel rakes of Parcel Vans/Railway Milk Tankers (RMTs) have been sent to different parts of the country to supply as per the demands of essential items such as milk powder, liquid milk and other general consumer goods. The total losses over Western Railway up to 17th April, 2020 have been estimated as Rs 457.63 Cr (inclusive of suburban + non-suburban). Inspite of this, Western Railway has ensured to refund Rs. 199.96 crore for cancellation of tickets till now. It's worth mentioning that in this refund amount, Mumbai Division itself, has ensured refund of Rs. 97.62 crore. Till now, 29.86 lakh passengers have cancelled their tickets over entire Western Railway & have received their refund amount accordingly.
