PR No. 919 SCR Revives Heritage Well at Zonal Railway Training Institute, Secunderabad


-It is step-well which is nearly 200 years old.

-The well  roughly yields 1 lakh liters of water per day

South Central Railway has rejuvenated the 200 year old Heritage Well at Zonal Railway Training Institute (ZRTI), Moula-Ali, Secunderabad, in tune with the emphasis laid by Ministry of Railways towards conservation of water and revival of water bodies. The well has been catering to the water requirements of the Zonal Railway Training Institute for over five decades. The project was undertaken with a cost of approximately Rs. 6 lakh and is expected to generate substantial savings of around Rs. 5 lakh per month.

            The heritage well which has a depth of about 50 ft. is yielding 1 lakh liters of water per day which is catering to the water supply needs ZRTI, Supervisors Training Centre (STC) and Territorial Camp (TA) office in the area. Rain Water harvesting pits have also been provided in the surrounding areas which will help to reduce rain water runoff and facilitate water conservation.

In addition, the well has been covered with Nylon mesh which helps to keep the water clean by preventing falling of leaves or other materials into the water. While pumping the water, manual chlorination is also being used to ensure supply of uncontaminated water. Maintenance and cleaning of the heritage well is being undertaken o­n regular basis. Beautification of the heritage well has been undertaken with fresh painting and decorative LED Lightings.

            Shri Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, South Central Railway appreciated the initiative undertaken by Hyderabad Division and ZRTI for revival of the heritage step-well. He stated that South Central Railway is committed towards environmental conservation and is continuously implementing several green initiatives and eco-friendly plans of action, in this regard. He stated that the revived heritage well will adequately serve all the domestic water requirements of ZRTI and also the surrounding offices (STC and TA Camp).

Historic significance:-

The Heritage well is said to be 200 year old open well provided with steps. The well has got historic significance during the pre-independence era of the Nizam period. Sir Mir Turab Ali Khan, Salar Jung-I (1829-1883) who was considered to be o­ne of the greatest Prime Ministers of Hyderabad used the well for irrigation purposes of mango gardens. For the purpose of staying of irrigation staff, 10 rooms were constructed by Nizams, parallel to the wall of the north side of the well. In post Independence period, the well was inherited by SCR in its formation year 1966.

PR. No. 844 - SCR Women’s Welfare Organization Celebrates 74th Republic Day






The South Central Railway Women’s Welfare Organization (SCRWWO) celebrated 74th Republic Day today i.e., 26th January, 2023 amongst the school children of Vidya Vihar High School, Chilkalguda, Secunderabad and at Aakaanksha, School for Divyang Children of Railway Families at Mettuguda, Secunderabad.

Smt.P. Sreelatha, Vice-President, SCRWWO, South Central Railway unfurled the National Flag in the presence of a large number of students at Vidya Vihar and Aakaanksha. The Executive Committee Members, SCRWWO also participated.

Speaking o­n the occasion, Smt.P. Sreelatha, Vice-President called upon the students to utilize the facilities provided at the school and study well to shine bright in life. She also advised students to develop academic skills, sports and cultural talent. She wished for a successful future of the students pursuing their education at Vidya Vihar School run by SCRWWO and advised the wards to bring laurels to the institute.

Vidya Vihar School was established in the year 1974 as a primary school and later upgraded to high school in the year 1997-98. It is providing education for about 510 students from LKG to SSC. The school has a spacious building with well equipped laboratory and library. Computer Education has been introduced as curriculum in all classes. Apart from the above, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities like, Scouts & Guides, Sports & Games etc.

Aakaansha, the school for divyang children of Railway families is run by Railway Parents Association and supported by SCRWWO. It was set up in the year 1992 with 40 children which has reached a strength around 60 children of different age groups providing academic, pre-vocational training to the children. SCRWWO sponsors subsidy towards staff salaries of the unit. Besides providing financial support to the children for participating sports/games, provision of uniforms, shoes etc.

Later, Smt.P.Sreelatha along with executive members of SCRWWO visited Central Railway Hospital, Lallaguda and distributed appliance to the wards useful to the in-patients and toys the children ward.
