North Central Railway carried out electrification of 439 Route Kilometers in 2021-22

North Central Railway carried out electrification of 439 Route Kilometers in 2021-22
652 track kilometers electrification completed by NCR
42 pairs of mail/express trains taken over from Diesel to Electric traction during 2021-22
7 new Traction substations commissioned during 2021-22
In pursuance of Mission 100% electrification, North Central Railway is carrying out electrification of its all routes and of the missing links on war footage. Financial Year 2021-22 proved to be an year of achievements for NCR where massive electrification works got completed in the Zone.
NCR total Broad Gauge network stands at 3222 Route kilometers(RKM), out of which now 3146 kilometers have been electrified. Thus 98% of the total broad gauge network of NCR has been electrified now. The work for remaining 76kilometers is in advanced stage and is targeted to be completed shortly.
In 2021-22, electrification of following routes was completed:

Mahoba- Khajuraho of Jhansi Division (64 RKM)
Khajuraho-Ishanagar of Jhansi Division (57 RKM)
Birlanagar- Udimore of Jhansi Division (101 RKM)
Mainpuri- Shikohabad of Prayagraj Division (51 RKM)
Mainpuri-Farrukhabad, along with Etawah-Mainpuri, Prayagraj Division (107 RKM)
Barhan-Etah of Prayagraj Division (59 RKM)

With these electrification works, Railway network spanning through the parts of districts of Etah, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Etawah, Firozabad and Agra of Uttar Pradesh and those of Gwalior, Bhind, Tikamgarh and Chhatarpur of Madhya Pradesh will now be served through electrified territories.
The significance of these massive electrification works lie in the fact that it will reduce the bottleneck of change of traction when a train coming from Electric locomotive arrives in a non-electrified territory. Since the requirement of changing of traction is done away with, it increases mobility and thereby is a leap ahead in improving the punctuality of trains. In Financial Year 2021-22, 42 pairs of mail/express trains running through NCR were taken over from diesel to electric traction after completion of major electrification works in NCR and different sections of other zones. Three more pairs of trains will be taken over on Electric Traction after issue of CRS sanction of Etah-Barhan section, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inspection of which has already been carried out.
Principal Chief Electrical Engineer NCR Shri Satish Kothari informs that in addition to the electrification of these major routes, all the new doubling or tripling works are being opened along with electrification.  Newly laid Jhansi- Babina third line (Jhansi Division), Bhuteshwar-Chhata fourth line (Agra Division), Dholpur-Bhandai third line (Agra Division) and sections opened in Kanpur-Virangana Lakshmibai section (Jhansi Division) are fully electrified. Massive electrification of existing sidings has also been done in 2021-22. As a result of all these, NCR successfully carried out 652 Track kilometers of electrification in the financial year.
Giving impetus to the power supply installations, 7 new Traction substations were commissioned in 2021-22 namely Chunar, Saifai and Bhongaon (Prayagraj Division); Newari and Harpalpur (Jhansi Division) and Ghosrana and Bhandai of Agra Division.
General Manager NCR Shri Pramod Kumar who conducted numerous inspections in field and called a series of meeting of all the stake holders to get these electrification works completed well in time says that not only punctuality of trains will increase but time taken in placements and removals of goods trains in sidings will alsocome down. “Electrification will also bring environmental benefits along with the improvement in mobility”, says Shri Pramod Kumar.

NCR registers 43% growth in freight revenue in Apri-May

56% growth in tonnage loaded, despite COVID

As the financial year 2021-22 sets in, the nation was caught in the grip of second wave of COVID, posing a stiff challenge to the pace of ongoing economic activities.

North Central Railways, besides responding to the pandemic through its medical infrastructure, sets new benchmark by recording a 56% increase in freight loading in April-May as compared to the corresponding period of previous year.

Chief Commercial Manager/Freight Marketing, NCR Smt Anu Mani Tripathi while sharing the data told that the Railway strived hard to ensure loading of essential commodities and other freight mix should not get hampered on account of the pandemic. All COVID related protocols were strictly implemented at all the goods shed and sidings where handling of consignments take place.

"Our officers in the field are leading from the front and maintaining close liason with the industry to cater it's demand", said Anu Mani Tripathi.

In terms of tonnage loaded, NCR showed an increase of 56% in April-May 2021 as compared to this period in 2020, while in terms of revenue earned, NCR shows an increase of 43% over previous year.

Cumulative earnings this year stood at Rs 286.44 crores as against Rs. 200.75 crores in April-May 2020.

Among the commodities registering an upward growth were Petroleum loading from Rasulpur (near Kanpur, Jhansi Division), Cement loading from Chunar and Parichha and DOC loading from Ramgarh (Agra Division) and Morena(Jhansi Division). However, the main trigger in the growth is attributed to container loading from various depots like Dadri, Kanpur (both Prayag raj Division) and Malanpur( Jhansi Division).

"As a result of aggressive freight marketing measures undertaken in the form of offering discounts under 'Station to Station concession scheme' , we are able to attract incremental traffic of foodgrains from places like Etah, Datia, Dabra, Morena, Hodal and Harpalpur", informed CCM FM.

"While foodgrain loading stood at 67 (number of rakes) in April-May 2020, this year 94 rakes of food grains have been loaded in this period" informed Shri P.K.Ojha, Chief Freight Traffic Manager(CFTM)/NCR, head of Business Development Unit(BDU), NCR. "In addition to it, number of rakes of ballast loaded in NCR has also registered an increase from 26 to 37 rakes in these opening two months of the financial year as compared to previous year", he added.

Upon achieving the milestone, GM NCR Shri V.K. Tripathi says that although a positive trend is palpable in first two months still we have to go a long way and have to maintain the pace throughout the financial years. Shri Tripathi also said that an analysis should be done regarding commodities which have shown a dip in loading and all out efforts should be made by BDUs to revive it.
