CORE (Central Organisation for Railway Electrification) CREATES HISTORY - ELECTRIFIES 4767 RKM OF BG NETWORK IN FINANCIAL YEAR 2022-23

CORE (Central Organisation for Railway Electrification) CREATES HISTORY - ELECTRIFIES 4767 RKM OF BG NETWORK IN FINANCIAL YEAR 2022-23

CORE ended the financial year 2022-23 on a high note with an unbeatable record of highest ever electrification of 4767 RKM (Route Kilometre).

Government of India has set a target to electrify the entire BG route by December 2023, taking into consideration inherent advantages of electric traction. CORE under the guidance of its General Manager, Shri Pramod Kumar scaled new heights by electrifying 4767 RKM in financial year 2022-23 surpassing its previous record of 4283 RKM in financial year 2021-22. To achieve this national mission, Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) is playing a pivotal role and working as a dedicated team, towards making the nation self-reliant by developing a safe, energy efficient, eco-friendly and economical rail transport system through its nine project units.

Other Public Sector Organisations and Zonal Railways are also involved in Railway Electrification. However, CORE has done the lion’s share of commissioning which is approximately 74% of overall electrification works carried out in the financial year 2022-23.

Secunderabad unit of CORE contributed 1050 RKM which is the highest ever electrification in the history of any project unit. This was followed by Bangalore unit which commissioned 713 RKM followed by Ahmedabad unit with 669 RKM. Jaipur contributed 670 RKM, New Jalpaigudi commissioned 580 RKM, Ambala commissioned 453 RKM, Chennai did 406 RKM, Lucknow contributed 194 RKM and Kolkata commissioned 31 RKM during the financial year 2022-23.

Apart from electrification of sections under the jurisdiction of various railways and in various States, CORE has been relentlessly targeting the commissioning of Traction Substations for strengthening the power supply system and ensuring smooth and safe train operations.  In the financial year 2022-23, a total of 61 Traction Substations (TSS) have been commissioned by CORE which a significant jump of 80 % compared to last financial year. Project units Secunderabad tops the list with 12 TSS. In other project units Bangalore commissioned 6 TSS, Ahmedabad commissioned 4 TSS, Jaipur commissioned 10 TSS, Ambala commissioned 6 TSS, Chennai commissioned 5 TSS, Lucknow commissioned 6 TSS, New Jalpaigudi commissioned 1 TSS and Kolkata commissioned 11 TSS. In the month of March alone, a total of 21 Traction Sub-Stations were commissioned in different railways which is a record for TSS commissioning on a monthly basis. Earlier, 11 Sub-Stations were commissioned in the month of January 2023.  This shows the importance CORE has attached to commissioning of Sub-Stations for smooth train operations.

Similarly, in this financial year a total of 50 Tower Wagon Sheds have been commissioned which is a quantum jump of 212 % compared to the last financial year.  Tower Wagon sheds are an indispensable part of traction maintenance works and CORE is taking all out efforts to commission the balance tower wagon sheds at the earliest.

In the financial year 2022-23, CORE has electrified many important sections, which will not only increase the sectional capacity and operational speed but also provide impetus to the socio-economic development of the adjoining regions.

An important electrified route from Prayagraj to Bhopal has been achieved with the electrification of Ishanagar-Udaipura section (75 RKM) apart from North Central Railway becoming 100% electrified.  With the electrification of the Sikar-Churu section (87 RKM), entire Shekhawati region, which is a major business and tourism hub, is now directly connection to Delhi on electric traction.

With the electrification of Shohratgarh-Pachpherwa-Subhagpur section (118 RKM) the entire alternative stretch from Gonda via Balrampur-Anand Nagar to Gorakhpur has been fully electrified.  At the same time entire State of Uttar Pradesh as well as NER have been fully electrified.

With the electrification of Pangri-Latur Road section (129 RKM), the entire stretch from Pune to Secunderabad via Kurduwadi, Latur Road and Vikarabad has been fully electrified. This will provide an alternative route to Pune-Wadi-Secunderabad section along with Central Railway being fully electrified.

The entire main line connecting Bengaluru and Hubballi has been fully electrified resulting in seamless end to end connectivity for running of Vande Bharat express with the electrification of Nittur-Arsikere-Birur-Hosdurga & Chikjajur-Devarguda-Karajagi-Hubballi sections (244 RKM).  Trains from New Delhi to Bikaner can now run on fully electrified route with the electrification of Benisar-Napasar-Bikaner section (61 RKM). Meghalaya has been connected with the rest of India on electrified route with the electrification of Dudhnoi-Mendipathar (20 RKM) route which is a major achievement.

            Other important sections which were electrified include HoleAlur-Badami-Guledagudda (41 RKM), Bangarpet-Kolar-Chikkaballapur-Yelahanka (103 RKM), Dindigul-Palani (56 RKM), Karaikkudi-Manamadurai (61 RKM), Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli-Tenkasi (133 RKM), Virudhunagar-Tenkasi-Sengottai-Bhagwatipuram (136 RKM), Parbhani-Parli-Vaijnath (62 RKM), Kalikiri-Thummanamgutta (50 RKM), Purnea-Jogbani (79 RKM), Chheharta-Atari (18 RKM), Samakhiali-Bachau, Bachua-Adipur via Gandhidham upto New Bhuj (115 RKM), Sihor-Bhavnagar Terminus (21 RKM) and Wankaner-Maliyamiyana (97 RKM).

General Manager Shri Pramod Kumar while addressing officers and staff at CORE/HQ said that this outstanding achievement is a result of tireless efforts, immaculate planning and precise coordination with the Zonal Railways. This shows the inherent strength of the Railway system in general and CORE in particular which is willing to accept challenges and deliver results. He congratulated the entire team CORE on such a stupendous feat and expressed happiness that CORE has played a leading role in electrification works will take Indian Railway to newer heights.
