Restoration and earmarking of coaches for accommodation of Unreserved Passengers in regular trains

During the Pandemic period and following lockdown, train services were run by Railways following all COVID protocols. Train services were introduced in a phased manner and all the services were run as Mail/Express special trains with only reserved coaches. Passenger trains and opening up of coaches for unreserved passengers were introduced in limited sectors and fewer trains in a graded fashion.

Recently, Southern Railway has commenced running of all the special mail/express trains as regular trains with numbers and fare that existed prior to COVID. Now, as directed by the Railway Board, in trains already restored with regular train numbers, second class accommodation earmarked as reserved coaches, but run as unreserved coaches prior to pandemic, shall be restored as unreserved coaches as existed during pre-COVID. This shall come into effect from Advance Reservation Period or No-booking date whichever is earlier.

In view of this, Southern Railway will restore the unreserved coaches now run as reserved coaches, in all Mail/express trains running with regular train numbers with effect from various dates as notified in the Annexure for the listed trains therein. This has been done taking into account the Advance Reservation Period and the No-booking date. The number and the type of coaches to be restored for unreserved accommodation will be as per the pattern the existed during pre-COVID.

The restoration of unreserved coaches to the pre-COVID status is being implemented for the regular trains and few special trains.  The restoration is being done in groups during various viz., 10th, 16th and 20th of March 2022, 01st, 16th, 20th of April 2022 & 01st of May 2022.
