CELEBRATION OF BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF SHRI SATYAJIT RAY AT EASTERN RAILWAY HEAD QUARTERS

Kolkata, May 02, 2022:

As a part of celebration of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', Eastern Railway has observed today (02.05.2022) birth anniversary of legendary film maker Shri Satyajit Ray, at the Auditorium of Eastern Railway Headquarters. Dr. Jaideep Gupta, Additional General Manager, Principal Head of the Departments and other officers of Eastern Railway offered floral tribute to the portrait of Sri Satyajit Ray. At this auspicious occasion, the famous 'Train Scene' of the time less masterpiece 'Pather Panchali ' was played.

 Satyajit Ray was a genius film maker, screen writer, documentary film maker, author, essayist, lyricist, magazine editor, illustrator, calligrapher and music composer. Widely considered as o­ne of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Ray brought the Indian cinema to world recognition with Pather Panchali (1955; The ballad of the Road) and its two sequels, known as the Apu Trilogy. As a director, Ray was noted for his humanism, his versatility, and his detailed control over his films and their music.

  Satyajit Ray was born to famous poet Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a visit to London. Along with Chidananda Dasgupta and others, Ray founded the Calcutta Film Society in 1947.

  Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with Aparaiito (The unvanquished) (1956) and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959), form The Apu Trilogy. His later films included - Parash Pathar (The Philosopher 's Stone, 1958), Jalsaghar (The Music Room, 1958), Devi (The Goddess, 1960), Teen Kanya (Jwo Daughters, 1961), Kanchenjungha, (1962), Charulala (The Lonely Wife, 1964), Pratidwandi (The Adversary 1970), Shantranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players, 1977), and Ghare-Baire (Home and the World, 1984).

  Satyajit Ray received several major awards in his illustrious career, including 36 Indian National Film Awards, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear, 2 Silver Bears, many additional awards at international film festivals and ceremonies, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna, its highest civilian award, in 1992. Satyajit Ray was also conferred highest French Civilian award “The Legion of Honour” in the year 1987. Twenty-four days before his death, Ray was presented with an Honorary Academy Award by Audrey Hepburn via video-link; he was in gravely ill condition, but gave an acceptance speech, calling it the "best achievement of [his] movie-making career. GM/ER  HONOURED  STAFF FOR SAFETY ALERTNESS

Kolkata, October 22, 2019:

Shri Suneet Sharma, General Manager, Eastern Railway in a high level meeting o­n Safety & Punctuality held at ER HQ today (22.10.2019) honoured five (5) Eastern Railway employees with Safety Awards for their diligent work towards ensuring safety in train operations and to avert situations that might have caused incidents.

Shri Sukumar Mandal, Technician of Sealdah Division while performing duty of primary maintenance at yard, detected a very crucial defect in the rake of 12343 Darjeeling Mail and accordingly rectified.

Shri Nageshwar Yadav, Track Maintainer of Asansol Division while o­n routine line inspection, detected a rail fracture and took steps to rectify it immediately. 

Sk. Sabirul Islam, Porter of Malda Division while o­n duty noticed a heavy smoke coming out from middle portion of 12183 Election special. He immediately informed the incident to the concerned authority and was able to stop the train. The train started after proper rectification.

Shri Jayanta Kumar Halder, Station Manager and Shri Koushik Mondal, Porter, Gour Malda of Malda Division while o­n duty detected and rectified a major rail fracture with their joint effort.

Thus, the sincerity and alertness of these railway employees helped in avoiding untoward incidents and Shri Sharma, GM/ER recognised the prudent and sincere works of staff of different categories involved in operational management.

In this meeting with Principal Officers & DRMs, GM/ER expressed his concern over achieving the targets and controlling of expenditure. He advised all DRMs to review expenditures and to exert all out efforts to increase financial position. Towards this goal, he suggested to increase freight loading, specifically coal loading and to increase revenue through passenger carrying and unusual sources i.e. non-fare revenue. He also stressed upon intensifying of ticket checking activities so as to eliminate travelling without ticket or with improper ticket.

Shri Sharma has also advised for more field inspections by the Divisional Officers to offer more safety to rail users and to take immediate action for any deficiencies found during inspection. He also advised to look into the matter of cleanliness in trains and at stations alongwith taking care of the various passenger amenity items.
