South Central Railway organised a Seminar on  “Energy Conservation” today (20.12.2013) as a part of National Energy Conservation Week being observed from 14th to 21st December, 2013. Senior railway officials and electrical staff of SCR, representatives from energy / lighting  equipment firms etc.,  attended the seminar in large number.

Shri P.K. Srivastava, General Manager / SCR, in his inaugural address, said that SCR implements the national policies on energy conservation. He appreciated the officials and staff responsible for getting two National Energy Conservation Awards in the current year Viz., First  Prize for Guntakal Pumping Station and Certificate of Merit for  Divisional Railway Manager’s Office, Vijayawada  from Bureau of Energy Efficiency. He spelled various measures to avoid wastage of electrical energy in traction and non-traction areas of railway working.

Shri K. L. Pandey, Addl. General Manager / SCR,  in his presidential address, reiterated the advantages of using energy efficient electrical equipments including CFL / LED bulbs and T5 Tube lights.

Shri Gangaram Agarwal, Chief Electrical Engineer / SCR, while welcoming the participants, said that rail transport is energy intensive accounting for 30% of the operating  cost. Energy conservation being an integral work culture, SCR practices several energy conservation measures in the traction arena such as   maximum use of regenerative braking,  coasting , switching off  of  idling Locos / rear Locos while driving light loads etc., and saved 63 million units of electricity costing Rs. 37 cr. in the year 2012-13. In the non-traction area also, SCR achieved 2.5% reduction by introducing star rated electrical appliances, use of renewable source of energy,  automation of pumps, provision of timer switches etc., in spite of growth of connected load in the year 2012-13, he added.

Several experts in energy conservation / non conventional energy sources, presented their technical papers focusing on the new trends in use of energy efficient electrical equipments and energy saving practices. SCR Awarded with the Prestigious All - India Level National Energy Conservation Awards-2013 GM/SCR Receives the Award from Hon’ble President of India at New Delhi

Shri P.K. Srivastava, GM/SCR receiving the award from Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble President of India

South Central Railway has been awarded two of the prestigious all-India level National Energy Conservation Awards – 2013, instituted by the Ministry of Power, Govt. of India.

SCR bagged the First Prize for Guntakal Pumping station in General Category sector and Certificate of Merit for Divisional Railway Manager’s office, Vijayawada in Office Buildings sector during National Energy Conservation Awards - 2013 in recognition of its achievements in the arena of energy conservation.

Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble President of India, presented these awards to Shri P.K. Srivastava, General Manager, South Central Railway in a grand ceremony held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on 16th December, 2013. Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Power (Independent Charge) was also present.

Guntakal Pumping station has reduced energy consumption in FY 2012-13 by 17.2% (from 12.7 Lakh units to 10.5 Lakh units) as compared to last year. The reduction has been possible by identification of inefficient pumps, over rated pumps and replacing the same with star rated energy efficient pumps along with provision of timers and Automatic Power Factor Conversion (APFC) panels etc.

Divisional Railway Manager’s office, Vijayawada has reduced energy consumption in    FY 2012-13 by 21.5% (from 12 Lakh units to 9.5 Lakh units) as compared to last year. This has been possible due to provision of T-5 fittings, star rated fans and AC units, solar light pipe system, solar street lights, occupancy sensors etc. Further, the previously existing overaged 22.5 Ton package AC units of Data centre were replaced with energy efficient 10 Ton package AC units.
