NFR’s initiative to improve passengers’ safety, Replacement of existing conventional rakes to Modern LHB rakes

Passenger safety and comfort is one of the major thrust areas of N. F. Railway. As an initiative to improve passenger safety and comfort, N. F. Railway has taken major steps by replacing the existing conventional rakes with LHB rakes design rakes. The LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches have been designed for improved passenger safety.LHB coaches are manufactured with anti-collision technology which causes less fatalities during accident. These coaches are made oflight weight low corrosive stainless steel, have higher carrying capacity, speed potential, and better safety features as compared to ICF coaches. The interiors are made of aluminium which makes them lighter when compared to the conventional rakes. Each coach also has an "Advanced Pneumatic Disc Brake System" for efficient braking at higher speeds, "Modular Interiors" that integrate lighting into the ceiling and luggage racks and wider windows.

During 2021-22, 07 trains of N.F. Railway were converted from ICF to LHB. Thus, total 40 trains originating from N.F. Railway are now converted into LHB and are running with high speed and modern LHB Coaches that provide more comfort and safety to the passengers.

The Hydraulic shock absorber and improved suspension system of LHB coaches ensures greater riding comfort for the passengers compared to conventional rakes. The air conditioning system of the LHB coaches is superior as compared to the older rakes and is controlled by a microprocessor which gives passengers better comfort during summer. The system is also enabled with a heating unit for comfort during winter seasons. These LHB Coaches are provided with Centre Buffer Coupling (CBC), which ensures greater safety.

In order to enhance the fire prevention in running trains , Fire extinguisher systems with anti - theft arrangement have been provided in total 378 of Non AC coaches, taking total number of coaches to 1685 . Besides this, 22 AC coaches have been fitted with fire detection system which activates alarm as well as auto stoppage of the train in case of fire in any coach. Now total 1685 Non AC Coaches, 190 AC Coaches, 98 Power cars and 38 Pantry Cars are provided with safety provisions for fire prevention.
